چکیده

A method of two-step gradient capillary electrochromatography (CEC) was developed to measure 12 carbonyls (aldehydes and ketones) in indoor air samples. The carbonyls were derivatized with 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPH) and then separated by a two-step gradient CEC on a C8 column. Effects of various instrumental conditions on the separation, including buffer concentration, organic modifiers, voltage, and cassette temperature, were investigated. The method detection limits for the 12 carbonyls ranged from 0.2 microg to 1.6 microg per sample and the recoveries were generally between 90 and 120%. A subset of 30 indoor air samples containing formaldehyde and acetaldehyde from 75 randomly selected homes in the city of Ottawa, Canada were measured using the CEC method. The concentrations of formaldehyde and acetaldehyde in these indoor air samples ranged from 5.8 microg/m3 to 85 microg/m3, and from 4.4 microg/m3 to 38 microg/m3, respectively. The comparison between CEC and the traditional HPLC method shows a good agreement in measured values.

The Place of Capillary Electrochromatography Among Separation Techniques—A Review

Replacing pressure-driven flow with electroosmotic flow in chromatography with packed capillary columns results in a new and powerful analytical technique, combining the advantages of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and capillary electrophoresis (CE): capillary electrochromatography (CEC). In essence, it involves packing CE capillaries with HPLC stationary phases and applying a vo...

Dual-gradient capillary electrochromatography by varying the mobile phase composition and applied voltage.

Dual-gradient capillary electrochromatography (DG-CEC) was developed to provide superior performance with regard to the separation of ionized analytes; in this method, both the eluent composition and the applied voltage are varied during the separation procedure. As for the gradient in the eluent composition, a shift in the pH is employed to control not only the electrophoretic mobility, but al...

Capillary electrokinetic separation techniques for profiling of drugs and related products.

Capillary electrokinetic separation techniques offer high efficiency and peak capacity, and can be very useful for the analysis of samples containing a large variety of (unknown) compounds. Such samples are frequently met in impurity profiling of drugs (detection of potential impurities in a pharmaceutical substance or product) and in general sample profiling (determination of differences or si...

Selectivity tuning in pressurized capillary electrochromatography with a zwitterionic monolithic column.

A polymethacrylate-based capillary monolithic column with zwitterionic functional groups was prepared by an in situ copolymerization method. The column was used in pressurized capillary electrochromatography (pCEC) for the separation of a test mixture of basic, neutral and acidic analytes. Unique manipulation of selectivity in pCEC was demonstrated by fine-tuning the applied voltage. The separa...

Capillary electrochromatography with contactless conductivity detection for the determination of some inorganic and organic cations using monolithic octadecylsilica columns.

A fast separation of alkali and alkaline earth metal cations and ammonium was carried out by capillary electrochromatography on monolithic octadecylsilica columns of 15 cm length and 100 microm inner diameter using water/methanol mixtures containing acetic acid as mobile phase. On-column contactless conductivity detection was used for quantification of these non-UV-absorbing species. The method...
